Latest company news about Why 380 V 93 kW Solar Pump Inverters Are Fitting Today's Larger Irrigation Loads

Irrigation is getting bigger

Irrigation systems have changed shape over the past decade. What used to be a single pump supplying a small plot is now often a well field, a multi-zone drip layout or a community water scheme, and the motor at the centre of it has grown with the demand. In many markets this has pushed buyers past the range of small solar pump inverters and into the three-phase class — where 380 V models around 90 kW have become a common specification.

Why three-phase at 380 V scales better

Three-phase motors carry the same power with lower current per phase than single-phase motors, which keeps conductor sizes and switchgear within practical limits as the rating climbs. At 380 V, a 93 kW drive also lines up with the three-phase pump motors that are already available, serviceable and standard in most agricultural markets, so a project does not need special-order equipment. That combination — a standard voltage, a standard motor, a rating high enough for real irrigation duty — explains most of the demand.

The PV array and the drive have to be sized together

A solar pump inverter only delivers what the array can supply. As the rating rises, the matching task becomes more important: module count and string configuration set the DC operating window, array oversizing decides how much of the day the pump runs at full speed, and cable selection determines how much of the harvested energy actually reaches the drive. Specifying the inverter alone, without the array and the pump curve, is the most common reason a larger system underperforms on paper and on site.

Hybrid input: the practical answer to cloudy days

Irrigation schedules rarely care about the weather. That is why so many new projects in this power class are specified as hybrid: the inverter takes DC from the PV array as its primary source and accepts an AC input from a generator or the local grid as a second source. A 93 kW drive with dual input lets a farm pump on solar through the day and keep the same pump running on AC when sunlight is not enough — without buying and maintaining a second drive.

What to check before you specify a 93 kW system

  • Pump curve, not just kilowatts. Head and flow determine the hydraulic power the motor actually needs; the inverter rating must cover that across the operating range.
  • Well depth and drawdown. Deeper static water levels and seasonal drawdown can shift the duty point significantly.
  • Array sizing and shade. Partial shading on a large array costs more than it does on a small one; string layout matters.
  • Cable runs and voltage drop. Long runs from the array or from the drive to the pump are a real source of losses at higher power.
  • Operating pattern. Continuous daytime pumping, night irrigation and multi-zone scheduling each call for different array and backup decisions.
  • Serviceability. Standard three-phase motors and standard voltages keep spare-parts and maintenance logistics simple.

Where the class is heading

The direction of travel is clear: irrigation projects keep getting larger, and the drive class that serves them keeps moving up. For a growing share of farms, the sensible specification now sits in the three-phase, 380 V, 90 kW range — large enough to move serious volumes of water, standard enough to be easy to source and service, and flexible enough to accept both solar and AC input.

Talk to us about your project

Shenzhen ZK Electric Technology Co., Ltd. supplies solar pump inverters from single-phase units through to three-phase and hybrid models. If you are planning a large irrigation or water-supply project, send the pump data and site conditions and the ZK team will help with the drive selection.
